PROGRAMME of EVENTS 2026
Monthly meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month at Filleigh Village Hall where coffee is served from 9.45 to 10.30am. The Chairman’s Welcome and Notices are at 10.30am followed by our Speaker at 10.45am.
Tuesday 13th January: ‘Dracula – the man behind the myth’. A presentation, written by a historian who holds joint British/Romanian citizenship, taking the audience through the remarkable real life-story of Prince Vlad III of Wallachia (better known as the inspiration for Count Dracula).
Tuesday 10th February: A presentation by Jennifer Young of ‘The Calvert Trust’ on their work in Exmoor. Many will know this organisation from their centre at Wistlandpound Reservoir – but find out more about their inspiring work.
Tuesday 10th March: South Molton u3a Annual General Meeting.
Tuesday 14th April: Stan Charles-Jones will tell us all about the inspiring work of ‘The Dogs Trust’, both locally and nationally.
Tuesday 12th May: ‘George and Ira Gershwin’. The hugely entertaining Roger Browne returns with anecdotes, insights and live musical performances covering the life and work of the Gershwins.
Tuesday 9th June: ‘Cybercrime Awareness’. No–nonsense yet entertaining police presenter Mick Harrison will be giving essential information about Cybercrime and how to protect yourself from it.
Tuesday 14th July: Master craftsman Adam Morrigan will be talking about ‘The History of Leather work and its huge importance in North Devon’.
Tuesday 11th August: Tom Hynes will be giving us what I am sure will be a fascinating insight into ‘The Importance of Devon’s Hedges’, covering their value for wildlife, their historical and landscape significance and how different management affects them.
Tuesday 8th September: Self acknowledged rebel, scientist and historian Myc Riggulsford returns to talk about ‘Natural Capital – protecting our roots or putting a price on forests?’, a refreshing reevaluation of how we value things.
Tuesday 13th Oct: ‘Desert Island Photographs’. Mark Haworth-Booth, former curator of photographs at the V&A Museum, will be introducing us to his favourites and sharing anecdotes about various famous artists and photographers with whom he has worked – including David Hockney and Henri Cartier-Bresson.
Tuesday 10th November: ‘Weirdest Buildings of the West Country’. Writer and photographer Robert Hesketh will be exploring an eclectic selection of weird and wonderful buildings including a pub constructed like a pack of cards, a lighthouse on stilts and a ghost village.
Tuesday 8th December: South Molton u3a Christmas Celebrations.
